A ghost is the soul or spirit of a dead person. There are scores of different beliefs and cultures about ghosts, such as whether they are animate or inanimate objects, whether they can look like anything, have any powers, etc.  Ghost folklore can be found in all cultures around the world—ghosts appear in literature as far back as "The Epic of Gilgamesh" (c 2100 BC). 

Ghosts are often associated with hauntings: people who claim to have seen a ghost and whom others see also see during an occurrence which causes feelings of fear and anxiety. Ghosts have also been reported to interact with the living in a number of ways, such as by watching over them and helping them or doing harm. This phenomenon is called haunting. Alleged sightings of ghosts have been reported in many cultures and time periods.

Ghost sightings are related to hauntings, the paranormal belief that ghosts inhabit a given locale, usually a house or building. People sometimes contact the police after they have seen what they perceive as a ghost, but the police will often reply that it was probably a natural occurrence and not an apparition. In most cases, it is explained in terms of psychology that people who believe they see ghosts are actually remembering events from their own pasts, either as visual or auditory hallucinations. If people do feel afraid by seeing such things as ghosts or demons then they may suffer from an anxiety disorder or even psychosis.

Most ghosts appear during times of emotional distress or extraordinary events; however, they may also appear at random times during the day or night without any notice from the living. The beliefs people have about ghosts have changed over time and depend on their culture and religion, as well as their survival abilities. Hauntings may be considered by some to be one of several types of paranormal phenomena. There exist many accounts of hauntings, sometimes presenting the activity as a kind of entity or even as malicious attacks on people by demons or deceased humans. 

In Central and South America, home "haunting" may be part of beliefs in the afterlife; such beliefs are also widespread in Asian cultures, which can include Taoist traditions and Buddhist lore. Belief in ghosts is common in cultures worldwide, reflecting a fear that the dead will disturb the living, often focusing on revenge for perceived wrongdoing committed against them during their life or honor an oath made concerning a promise they were unable to fulfill before death.

Most people have seen or heard a ghost at some point in their lives; however, they may not be able to explain it. In such cases, it is easy to dismiss it as one's imagination or deny that it occurred at all, but you might accept this fact if you are confident that you are not hallucinating and do not suffer from any mental illness whatsoever.

They can be separated into two groups which are the following:

1) The "Incorporeal Spirits" - These entities are ghosts that have never had a corporeal body, such as angels or demons. They may only exist inside a person's mind and their presence can be seen by this person but not by anyone else.

2) "Corporeal Spirits" - These entities are ghosts that have had a corporeal body at one point in their existence. They will always look like they did when they were alive, despite all the changes to their personality or behavior.

Ghosts are often viewed as strange beings that walk from place to place. When people see these ghosts, they generally believe the energy is not alive. However, it is believed that ghosts possess a spark of life within them, making it possible for them to be seen and interacted with. Ghosts may also possess the ability to travel through space but not through time. Ghosts can leave physical evidence of their presence: footprints, broken objects, articles left behind.

Apparitions

The term "ghost" has been applied figuratively in ways that are not always connected to the paranormal. The term may be used for a secret, unspoken fear or even a mental transformation. A "dark ghost" is people who represent the worst of humanity, expressing hatred and fear of other people. A "white ghost" is a figure that is unheard of. It is often used to describe an extremely ancient thing in order to express wonder or amazement. Another use of the word refers to when someone has died, especially by suicide or unknown causes, and their spirit moves on instead of passing through the traditional afterlife. A "spirit" that does not physically leave the body may use this to guide or warn the living about a new situation.

A phantom is a beast that has no physical manifestation. It is said to be a supernatural entity that resembles something akin to a ghost, but with no substance. Phantoms are mostly formed of air that people can see and feel. As there is nothing substantial to it, it can easily be ignored as a figment of the imagination. Phantoms also appear when one's heart is filled with anxiety, especially one who views his or her life as being in danger or watching danger approaching them.

A wraith (also known as a shadow, a shade, an apparition or a phantasm) is an illusory double of some hominid. Wraiths have been depicted in various legends and stories from around the world. They are created by the mind of the person seeing them and stay within their mind for awhile before taking shape. People may also see ghosts in dreams or nightmares.

A poltergeist is a hidden presence that moves within an object, usually creating rumbles or knocks but also causing all sorts of other disturbances. Sometimes these manifestations are believed to be caused by invisible entities, which may be benevolent in nature or malevolent in intent.

Nonhuman ghost is any ghostly phenomenon that has no human counterpart. It refers to anything that is not human and can be attributed to ghosts. This category of phenomena includes animals and animal-like spirits, as well as objects and places supposedly haunted by ghosts.

Demons are supernatural creatures of various kinds. They appear in religious stories, myths and legends, and in some cases may be considered to be symbolic of certain ideas. Many types of demons are listed in the Necronomicon. Generally, they are known as evil entities. 

A doppelgänger is a double or look-alike of a living person. They can also be referred to as "Shadow people" or "Fetch," though this term is more commonly used in relation to the Goetic spirit Barbatos. In modern fiction they are often portrayed as harbingers or portents of death.
